All EFI engine fuel pumps currently in use are electric and installed in fuel tank.
When oil pump is on and running, heat generated by coil is dissipated by gasoline around oil pump.
Then, if amount of fuel is too low, fuel pump will not be soaked with gasoline and will not be able to dissipate heat effectively, resulting in too high a temperature. Prolonged operation in this state will shorten life of fuel pump accordingly, which can fail in a minute or two if it is turned on and runs without oil. Therefore, it is recommended that car owners refuel as early as possible to provide a good environment for fuel pump to dissipate heat.
The reason engine uses an electric oil pump is because electric pump can rotate oil in pump ahead of time before engine starts.
How to reduce fuel pump damage
