How to Change Oil and Filter in Your Car
Regular oil changes are essential to keeping your car running smoothly and efficiently. Not only does changing oil help to extend life of your engine, but it also improves fuel economy and overall performance. Before you start, make sure you have all necessary tools and materials on hand. These include a wrench or socket set, an oil filter wrench, an oil pan, a new oil filter, and correct type and amount of oil for your car.

1. Prepare your car: Park your car on a level surface and engage parking brake. It's also a good idea to let engine warm up for a few minutes, as warm oil flows more freely.
2. Locate oil drain plug: Underneath your car, you will find an oil pan. The drain plug is usually located at bottom of pan. Position oil pan beneath drain plug to catch old oil.
3. Drain oil: Use a wrench or socket set to loosen drain plug, then carefully remove it by hand. Allow old oil to drain completely into pan. Be cautious, as oil may still be hot.
4. Replace oil filter: The oil filter is typically located near drain plug. Use an oil filter wrench to loosen and remove old filter. Before installing new filter, apply a small amount of fresh oil to rubber gasket to ensure a proper seal. Tighten new filter by hand.
5. Install drain plug: Once old oil has completely drained, reinstall drain plug. Be sure to tighten it securely, but do not overtighten.
6. Refill with new oil: Locate oil filler cap, usually located on top of engine. Remove cap and pour in recommended amount of fresh oil. Use a funnel to avoid spills. It's always a good idea to double-check your owner's manual for correct oil type and quantity.
7. Check oil level: After pouring in new oil, allow it to settle for a few minutes. Then, remove dipstick, wipe it clean, reinsert it, and remove it again to check oil level. Add more oil if necessary.
8. Clean up: Discard old oil and filter at a certified recycling center. Be sure to clean up any spills or drips to prevent environmental contamination.
